What to do if your permanent tooth is knocked out

Find the tooth and rinse it gently with water or milk. Hold the tooth by the crown to avoid damaging the root. Do not scrub the tooth or use soap. If possible, try to replace the tooth in the socket and hold in place with guaze or a wash clothe. If you cannot replace the tooth, then place the tooth in (in order of preference) Hanks Balanced Salt Solution, cold milk or saline. Contact your pediatric dentist immediately. The faster you act, the great the chance of saving the tooth.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards should be used by anyone who plays contact sports such as:

- football

- soccer

- basketball

- ice hockey

- lacrosse

Even those participating in noncontact sports can benefit from a mouth guard.

There are three types of Mouthguards:

Stock mouth protectors – preformed and ready to wear. Inexpensive, but bulky and provide the least protection.
Boil and bite mouth protectors – Readily available, made from a thermoplastic material that molds to mouth for a better fit.
Custom-fitted mouth protectors – Provides most comfort, best fit and protection. Most Expensive.

SPORTS DRINKS FACTS

  • - The high sugar content and acids in sports drinks can damage tooth enamel and roots of the teeth.

- Sports Drinks have been found to be more corrosive to teeth than colas and juices.

- Sports Drinks should be limited to use during athletic events to stay hydrated.

- To neutralize the effect of sports drinks on your teeth, try alternating sips of water with the drinks to prevent sugars and acid from sticking to the teeth.

- Another way to prevent harmful sugars and acids from coming in contact with teeth while drinking sports drinks and other harmful beverages is to use a straw to direct the drinks to the back of the throat.

What are the benefits of Digital X-rays?

Digital Dental Radiology utilizes electronic sensors instead of film to receive images generated by x-ray exposure. They can reduce radiation exposure by 80 to 90% over traditional x-ray film. The images produced are more flexible, in that brightness, contrast and image size can be adjusted so that patients can better see diagnosed problems or decay.

Digital X-rays do not require chemical processing so they can be viewed within 3 seconds of exposure. If referral to a specialist is necessary, a high quality image of the X-ray can be printed and many offices can now accept X-rays via e-mail. This eliminates the problems frequently encountered with poor quality duplicate x-rays. Digital X-rays do not degrade over time the way that film can.
